SEIZING THE WINDOW

In college athletics, momentum is everything. A winning season can shift perception overnight, while the right facility can secure that edge for years to come. The rarest moments happen when the two converge — when on-field performance and bold investment reinforce one another.

That’s exactly what Vanderbilt achieved with the transformation of FirstBank Stadium’s south end zone.

THE BOLD DECISION

When Vanderbilt launched the Vandy United campaign, its most ambitious athletics initiative ever, one project stood out: reimagining both end zones of FirstBank Stadium. The following year, construction began in the south end zone. The goal wasn’t just to add capacity. It was to elevate fan experience, ignite donors, and give players and recruits a stage that matched the program’s ambitions.

That decision proved perfectly timed.

MOMENTUM ON THE FIELD

As construction advanced, the Commodores delivered one of their strongest stretches in recent memory. The 2024 season ended with a bowl appearance and a statement win over Alabama. The energy carried into 2025, with Vanderbilt building on that success just as the south end zone opened.

DESIGNED FOR IMPACT

The transformation reshaped every layer of the game day experience and built a bridge to Nashville itself.

  • The Star Walk: The team’s pathway from McGugin into the stadium was reimagined as a dramatic light-filled tunnel, turning every player entrance into a moment of spectacle. The programmable lighting and embedded “Anchor Down” storytelling set the tone for both players and fans before kickoff.
  • Premium Clubs: Three levels of suites and clubs raised the standard for hospitality in Nashville, including the Anchor Down Club, which celebrates the stadium’s music legacy and the artists who have performed there.
  • Concourse Storytelling: Working closely with Vanderbilt leadership, the design team brought to life not just the story of the program but the history that has unfolded in the stadium itself — from legendary athletic moments to iconic concerts that connect Vanderbilt to the larger Nashville community.

The project went beyond football. It created a flexible venue that now positions Vanderbilt to host concerts, community events, and shared experiences that deepen its roots in Music City. That broader connection was central to the vision of Vanderbilt’s Deputy Athletic Director for External Engagement and Facilities, Derek Grice, who saw the south end zone not only as a home for Commodore football but as a venue that could connect Vanderbilt more deeply to the city of Nashville.

Classic meets modern. Upscale, but with the electricity of a Saturday in the SEC. That was the balance we struck.

MOMENTUM MADE VISIBLE

When the south end zone opened in 2025, the transformation spoke for itself:

  • 2021 → Vandy United campaign announced
  • 2022 → Construction begins
  • 2024 → Football surges with a bowl appearance and a win over Alabama
  • 2025 → Commodores continue their strong run as the project opens
  • 130,000 sq. ft. of new space reshaped FirstBank Stadium
  • 20 new suites and 1,000+ club seats expanded premium inventory
  • Field-level seating unlocked a new revenue tier
  • Modern locker rooms and athlete facilities elevated the player experience
  • Event-ready design allows Vanderbilt to host concerts and community events year-round

This was more than construction. It was a declaration that Vanderbilt is no longer playing catch-up. They’re setting a pace and extending their reach beyond the field.

OUR TAKE

At Jack Porter, we know our role isn’t to be the hero of the story. That belongs to our clients. Our job is to be the guide who helps them turn vision into action and protect it through the ups and downs of a complex process.

My role was protecting Vanderbilt’s vision — making sure the execution stayed true even as priorities and people changed.

Leah Gross | Account Director, Jack Porter

For Vanderbilt, that meant more than designing beautiful spaces. It meant safeguarding the intent behind Vandy United through leadership changes, shifting priorities, and evolving sponsorship needs. By the time the Commodores surged in 2024 and carried that momentum into 2025, the facilities were ready to amplify it and connect it to something larger than football — the fabric of Nashville itself.

That’s the value of partnership: protecting a client’s vision until the moment it can shine. When vision and timing align, the impact goes beyond buildings. It moves communities forward.

We make where matter.
