USC Upstate faced a critical turning point with its first capital project in nearly two decades. Their existing library had reached full capacity, with limited space for students and staff. This was particularly important for a campus community that includes many commuter students. The university needed a facility that would address current space constraints while creating an inviting destination that showcased the institution’s commitment to upward mobility and growth.
Jack Porter developed an integrated design strategy that transformed a functional expansion into a meaningful experience, balancing contemporary aesthetics with elements honoring the campus’s natural character. The approach created a cohesive environment where every surface reinforces the university’s story through upward-moving visual elements. Standout features include a textural welcome wall displaying greetings in all languages represented within the student population, a campus history timeline displaying preserved trees removed during construction, and a symbolic glass walkway connecting the original library to the expansion that mirrors the institution’s progression from traditional to contemporary. This transformation has become more than a capacity solution; it’s a physical manifestation of the Spartans’ vision that inspires students and staff, creates meaningful engagement opportunities, and demonstrates the university’s commitment to reach greater heights.
